Good to Know

Airports, taxis, cash, heat — the practical things, answered once.

Getting Here

Fly into Mérida (MID) — it is about 20 minutes from Centro. Cancún (CUN) looks close on a map but is a four-hour drive away, so check the airport code before you book.

Getting Around

Centro is a flat grid and easy on foot. Uber and DiDi both work in the city and are inexpensive. At the airport, the prepaid taxi booth in arrivals is the reliable option. You only need a rental car for the day trips.

Money & Tipping

Prices are in pesos. Cards work at restaurants and bars, but carry cash for markets, marquesita carts and small taxis. Tipping is typically 10–15%.

Heat & Water

Drink bottled or filtered water, not tap. Midday sun is genuinely strong — explore early, take the afternoon slowly, and head back out after 7pm when the city comes alive.

Safety

Mérida is consistently ranked among the safest cities in Mexico, and Centro stays busy well into the night. Ordinary city sense is all you need.

A Little Spanish

English is common in Centro, less so elsewhere. Three that go a long way: ¿Cuánto cuesta? (how much), la cuenta, por favor (the bill), sin hielo (no ice).

Free

These are long-running weekly traditions, but start times shift with the season and holidays can move them — worth a quick check once you know your dates.

🗓️

If You Only Have a Few Days

One way to string the list above together, if you'd rather not plan.

Day One

Centro on Foot

Coffee at Pancho Maíz or Marmalade, then Plaza Grande and the cathedral before the heat sets in. Hide from the afternoon sun at MUGY, and finish with dinner and live music around Mercado 60.

Day Two

Montejo & a Night Out

Walk Paseo de Montejo and its mansions, with an ice cream stop at Dulcería Colón. Book dinner at Micaela Mar & Leña or Crabster, then cocktails at Flamel or VANA.

Day Three

Get Out of Town

Pick one: ruins at Uxmal (quieter than Chichén Itzá), a swim at the Mucuyché cenotes, or seafood and sea breeze at Progreso. Leave early — everything is better before noon.

Buen Viaje !

Enjoy your stay in Mérida, Yucatán.
